Worst-case-scenario night knocks Capitals out of playoff spot with 3 games remaining
Briefly

Not only did the Capitals fall out of the second wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but they now no longer control their own destiny. Every team they are battling with in the East got at least one standings point on the evening.
The most devastating outcome may have been the New York Islanders' 3-2 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens. The Islanders now have a four-point lead over the Capitals for the third and final playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division.
Per Money Puck, the Capitals' playoff odds dropped from 42.3 percent on Tuesday night to 18.8 percent tonight. The Penguins are now the team to beat (57.8 percent) as the Islanders have virtually clinched (91.8 percent).
