The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery is set with the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks as the top contenders again. Both teams ended the last season in the bottom two standings, with the Sharks having a 25.5% chance of winning the lottery and the Blackhawks at 13.5%. San Jose seeks back-to-back first overall picks, while Chicago aims to land a top-two selection for the third consecutive year. The lottery determines the order of the first 16 draft picks, allowing non-playoff teams a chance to improve their roster through the draft.
San Jose last year won the Macklin Celebrini sweepstakes for the franchise's first-ever No. 1 pick, and the Sharks can now become the first team since the Edmonton Oilers to pick first overall in consecutive drafts.
The Blackhawks jumped from third to first in the 2023 lottery to secure Connor Bedard, and they retained last year's No. 2 pick before selecting Artyom Levshunov.
The draft lottery awards the top two picks and sets the order for the first 16 selections, including all non-playoff teams.
For the lottery, 1,001 different four-number combinations are distributed among teams, giving the worst team the most combinations and so on.
