The NHL Watch Comms app, developed in collaboration with Apple, equips NHL officials with smart technology to enhance their awareness during games. By utilizing custom Apple Watches, referees can receive critical in-game data, including the game clock and alerts for players' penalization statuses through haptic feedback. This synergy between the app and NHL's Oasis system ensures all officials are synchronized with real-time updates, ultimately enabling them to focus better on gameplay while managing various responsibilities on the ice.
"We wanted to make sure that the officials had really good awareness and were able to keep their eyes on play," says Andres de Corral, vice president of digital services at Presidio, a tech firm that helped develop the app.
"As they're doing all those things, it sounds crazy to say, but they're also trying to find the game clock on the video board," explains Dave Lehanski, the NHL's executive vice president of business development.
