Matt Roy and Dylan McIlrath miss Capitals practice after suffering injuries in preseason finale against Blue Jackets
"The two veteran defensemen suffered injuries - Roy an upper-body injury and McIlrath a lower-body injury - against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the Capitals' preseason finale on Saturday night. Neither player was able to finish the game, leaving the Caps with just four defenders for the final 10 minutes and 36 seconds of the third period. Neither Matt Roy (upper-body) nor Dylan McIlrath (lower-body) are practicing this morning. Both sustained injuries against the Blue Jackets on Saturday."
"Head coach Spencer commented postgame that the Capitals would evaluate the two blueliners on Sunday, which was a day off for the team after wrapping up their preseason schedule. "It doesn't look like it's super significant or a long-term thing," Carbery said. "Maybe a week, two weeks. I don't want to throw anything out there.""
"McIlrath, 33, spent most of last year as the team's seventh defenseman, getting into 17 games, which was the most NHL games he has played in a single season since he got a sweater 34 times with the New York Rangers during the 2015-16 campaign."
Matt Roy and Dylan McIlrath did not practice after sustaining upper- and lower-body injuries, respectively, in the preseason finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both were unable to finish that game, leaving the Capitals with only four defenders late in the third period. The coaching staff planned evaluations the following day and estimated the injuries may sideline the players a week or two. Roy previously suffered an early-season injury last year but still played 69 games in 2024-25 and is entering the second year of a six-year, $34.5 million contract. McIlrath served primarily as the seventh defenseman last season, appearing in 17 games.
