Matthew Schaefer, 18, made his NHL debut less than a month ago with the New York Islanders and has adjusted seamlessly to the league. His immediate family could not relocate with him, but Matt Martin and his family invited Schaefer to live with them for his rookie season. Schaefer described Martin as like a dad and brother and credited the Martins and their wife for welcoming him into their home. Schaefer frequently appears on social media interacting with the Martins' two sons and two daughters and engages in playful banter with family members including Boomer Esiason. After Schaefer's first two-goal game, the Martins' daughters chanted support.
