Maple Leafs place Chris Tanev on IR retroactive to October 21, recall Dakota Mermis
""I'm not going to lie with you, when he stays down it's definitely scary because I have never played with a guy as tough as Chris Tanev,""
""So, it's not a good feeling, as a group, when you see a guy like that go down, but he seems to be doing well and tough as nails.""
Chris Tanev suffered an upper-body injury after colliding with New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer and was ruled out during the third period, skating to the locker room and not returning. The Maple Leafs placed Tanev on injured reserve retroactive to October 21, making him ineligible for at least seven days with an earliest return of October 29 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Dakota Mermis was called up from the AHL Toronto Marlies. Tanev is a top defensive defenceman and elite shot-blocker, so his absence is a difficult loss early in the season. Philippe Myers is expected to slot into the lineup, with Mermis and Henry Thrun as additional options. Mermis recorded seven assists in 32 AHL games and one assist in three NHL games last season. Further injury details are likely after Thursday's practice.
