"I think these losers who made this show are cowards,"
"This is the trash they make because it panders, it's provocative, and it checks inclusivity boxes."
"No greater indictment of the current culture of inclusivity in hockey than Empty Netters feigning queer allyship while secretly mocking and demeaning the people who were keeping their bills paid,"
Dan Powers, host of Empty Netters, says his remarks were taken out of context after private text messages surfaced showing him calling Heated Rivalry creators 'losers' and 'cowards.' The Empty Netters podcast, hosted by brothers Dan and Chris Powers, gained substantial YouTube viewership after reacting to Heated Rivalry; the top six performing videos on their channel are Heated Rivalry related, and recaps of episodes one, five and six each have over 500,000 views. The podcast sells $32 Heated Rivalry T-shirts and $45 crew necks and received attention from Vulture and Rolling Stone for LGBTQ+ inclusion. Fans of Heated Rivalry expressed fury and accused the hosts of feigning allyship while mocking the creators.
