Ex-Islander Matt Martin looks to become a GM
Briefly

Matt Martin has shifted his focus to a potential career in hockey management and broadcasting after retiring as a player. Following his retirement, he accepted a role as a special assistant to Islanders GM Mathieu Darche. His goal is to become an NHL GM. Martin is gaining experience by being involved in player evaluations, scouting, and contract negotiations. He plans to travel to watch Islanders' prospects play. He feels the role is akin to learning as a young player and is eager to understand the complexities of team management.
"Matt is, first of all, a great person. Very smart. He's already very involved in those meetings. He's got great values. And I think he's going to be outstanding in that job. The only problem for him is I think he'll be a GM somewhere faster than everybody would think."
"If you asked me before I even took this job [being a GM] is one of the things that interests me. I really do want to learn the ins and outs of everything. Darche has said I'm going to have the ability to do a lot of different things. I spent some time with the scouts this week. Spent time on the draft. It was pretty cool to see all the behind-the-scenes things that, as a player, you don't focus on or think about."
