Wayne Gretzky's trade to the NHL's lone warm winter team, the Los Angeles Kings, in 1988 led to a domino effect resulting in the addition of Florida, California, and other relocated teams, transforming the NHL's structure.
Desperate to avoid losses, WHA owner Skalbania signed a young Wayne Gretzky for the Indianapolis Racers. After a few games, Gretzky's contracts were sold, paving the way for his iconic career in Edmonton.
