Capitals select giant Latvian winger, Eriks Mateiko, in third round of 2024 NHL Draft
Briefly

Eriks Mateiko, a massive six-foot-five-inch Latvian winger from the QMJHL's Saint John Sea Dogs, was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 2024 NHL Draft as the 90th overall pick, marking the first time a Latvian-born player was drafted by the team.
Mateiko, known as 'The Moose' by his team's coaching staff, showcased his skills with 43 points in 49 games for the Sea Dogs last season, leading the team in goals and ranking second in points.
Having also represented Latvia at the U20 World Junior Championship, Mateiko established himself as one of the country's top prospects, notably being the highest Latvia draft pick since Martins Dzierkals in 2015.
