Tulane's Sumrall mourns father's death before CFP
""God gave us more time with my dad than we thought we would get," Sumrall said in a message posted on social media. "Dad was a fighter. I learned so much from him ... being a man of faith, grit, hard work, attitude, service and more.""
""He was always there for me and I know he will be watching," said Sumrall, who is staying on as Tulane's coach through the playoffs."
""Love you always Dad!""
Jon Sumrall's father, George Sumrall, died in his sleep at age 77 after lengthy health issues. Sumrall said more time was granted with his father and described him as a fighter who taught faith, grit, hard work, attitude and service. George Sumrall attended Tulane's 34-21 American Athletic Conference championship win over North Texas two weeks earlier and the Gainesville news conference announcing Sumrall's hiring as Florida's coach. Sumrall will stay on as Tulane's coach through the playoffs. Tulane (11-2) travels to Ole Miss (11-1); the winner will face No. 2 Georgia at the Sugar Bowl.
