Three catalysts to the Seahawks' Super Bowl defense
""Well," Macdonald said before a brief pause, "right up my alley.""
""We just made kind of a pact with each other: We're going to be a great defense no matter what it takes," Macdonald said of that 2024 meeting, "and they bought in. It didn't happen overnight, but that's the type of stuff and the dedication it takes, moving in the same direction to actually make this thing come to life.""
Mike Macdonald, 38, is the architect and playcaller of the Seahawks defense. The unit allows a league-low 17.2 points per game and, including the playoffs, has held opponents to 10 points or fewer five times. That defense drove a club-record 14 regular-season wins and a Super Bowl berth. The defense experienced growing pains early in 2024 after Macdonald replaced Pete Carroll, then shifted following a pivotal Week 11 meeting when players committed to becoming a great defense. Success stems from Macdonald's schematic design and multiple difference-makers at all three levels, including cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
