In Charlotte, rookie quarterback Tyler Shough earned his first career win, completing 19-of-27 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers. The victory gave the 2-8 Saints their first win since Week 5 against the New York Giants. Shough described a celebratory locker-room atmosphere and emphasized learning, competing and repeating as keys to future success. He became the first Saints rookie to start and win a game since Dave Wilson in 1981. Shough took over in Week 8 after Spencer Rattler was benched and was named starter for the rest of the season. The Saints played without three starting offensive linemen after trading Trevor Penning, with Taliese Fuaga out with an ankle injury and Erik McCoy sidelined for the season.
