Sean McVay on the Rams' special teams issues: 'We need to be better'
""I know his capacity, I know the accountability, I know the core belief that he has," McVay said of Kotwica, who has been a Rams assistant this season after working as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator the previous two. "This late in the year, you're not naive to, you're going to keep a lot of the foundational things. "But I think there's some things"
"Blackburn's departure marked the first time in McVay's nine seasons with the Rams that he fired a coach during the season. McVay said he informed Blackburn of his decision Friday morning, the day after Rashid Shaheed of the Seahawks returned a fourth-quarter punt for a touchdown that sparked a comeback from a 16-point deficit and helped send the Rams to defeat."
Sean McVay replaced special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn and assigned Ben Kotwica to oversee the unit. Kotwica previously worked with McVay in Washington and served as a Rams assistant this season after two years as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator. Matt Harper, formerly the 49ers assistant special teams coach (2021–2024), will join to assist Kotwica. The Rams stand 11-4 and clinched a playoff spot but dropped from the NFC No. 1 seed to No. 5 following a 38-37 overtime loss to Seattle. Costly special teams errors, including Rashid Shaheed's fourth-quarter punt return touchdown and earlier blocked kicks, prompted the change.
