The NFL will phase out traditional chain crews for measuring first downs this fall, opting for a camera-based system to enhance accuracy and efficiency. Six cameras will be placed in each stadium and operated by Hawk-Eye technology, which has been assisting with replay since 2021. This new approach promises to streamline the measurement process, saving approximately 40 seconds on each call. The move follows a controversial 2022 AFC Championship Game incident that highlighted the limitations of traditional methods, although referees will continue to place the ball using their judgment before technology takes over.
Starting this fall, the NFL will retire the use of chain crews to measure for first downs in favor of camera-based technology that can determine the distance automatically.
Hawk-Eye has provided in-game replay assistance to NFL officials since 2021, and the new measurement system was tested "extensively" in 2024, the league said.
