""concern that [Kneeland] recently separated from his girlfriend""
""wanted to make sure he was mentally fit to possess a firearm,""
""After speaking with Kneeland, he voluntarily turned the firearm into WMUPD for safekeeping until cleared by a counselor,""
Western Michigan University police were twice called to perform welfare checks on Marshawn Kneeland while he played for the school. Coaches expressed concern that Kneeland had recently separated from his girlfriend and wanted to ensure he was mentally fit to possess a firearm. In June 2023, after speaking with officers, he voluntarily turned his firearm over to WMUPD for safekeeping until cleared by a counselor. Twelve days later he retrieved the gun after presenting a letter from a social worker stating he was examined and not a threat to himself or others. An earlier incident in September 2020 indicated he was dealing with mental-health issues as early as 2020.
