Patriots' Christian Gonzalez wanted to be his '5-year-old self' in first game in 2 months
"All I do and want to do is play football, so it was fun to finally get out there."
""Anything can be a little challenging [when] not doing it for a long time," Gonzalez said postgame. "But at the end of the day I've done this since I was 5 years old. So my mindset going into the game today was not to really think of how long it's been like that. Just, it's another football game. Go out there and be my 5-year-old self. Go out there and have fun. Have that joy of just being back on the field.""
Christian Gonzalez missed two months after a hamstring strain that began during training camp, sidelining him through the first three games of the season. The 23-year-old had earned an All-Pro nod in his second full season and was expected to anchor New England's defense. Gonzalez returned Sunday against the Carolina Panthers for his first game since Dec. 28, 2024, and logged 49 defensive snaps. He anticipated some rust given limited reps but focused on playing with joy and treating the contest like any other football game. The Patriots won 42-13.
