Kiffin ready to make LSU nation's 'best program'
"He said he informed Ole Miss administrators on Saturday night that he was going to take the LSU job, and continued a conversation in earnest through Sunday trying to figure out a solution to how he could continue to coach the Rebels in what he called the "most historic sporting event in the history of the state of Mississippi, a home playoff game."
"Eventually Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter made the decision that he would not coach the Rebels in the future, which Kiffin said he respected. He said Carter told him that while it may make sense make sense to everybody outside the program to keep the staff together for the playoffs, he's the one that has to live in Oxford going forward after Kiffin is gone."
Lane Kiffin was introduced as LSU's new coach and pledged to restore LSU to the best program in college football. The move ended a months-long coaching saga that included interest from Florida and LSU while Ole Miss attempted to retain him. Kiffin departs Ole Miss during an 11-1 season with the Rebels ranked No. 7 in the College Football Playoff standings. The final 48 hours were described as excruciating, with angry Ole Miss fans at the airport. Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter decided Kiffin would not coach the Rebels going forward, citing long-term community considerations.
