"He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."
"I'm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time."
"He was one of the best leaders on so many great teams, who was consistently positive, yet incredibly competitive. A very special person who's gone way too soon."
Nick Mangold died Saturday night at 41 of complications from kidney disease. He had battled kidney disease since 2006 and was undergoing dialysis while seeking a kidney transplant. He posted a letter on social media less than two weeks earlier describing a rough summer and the need for a donor. Mangold was a first-round pick in 2006 and spent 11 seasons as the Jets' center, starting 164 games and anchoring the offensive line. He made seven Pro Bowls, was a two-time first-team All-Pro, and was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor in 2022. Team leaders and former coaches praised his leadership, toughness, warmth and loyalty, and former coach Rex Ryan became emotional when speaking about him.
