Cowboys' free agency decisions begin with George Pickens
"Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones loves where the team is in its ability to add quality players through the draft and free agency, which he traces to the decision made at the start of the 2025 season. "The very best of what we were trying to get involving the Micah Parsons trade is all out there ahead of us," Jones said at the end-of-season press conference."
"At this moment, the salary cap picture is more of a Monet painting -- a little fuzzy depending on the perspective. What we know is the Cowboys will need to clear space to get under the 2026 cap. What we don't know is just how much. That will come sometime in early March when the cap is set. The Cowboys have contracts totaling about $330 million in cap room. Some NFL cap projections are between $295 million and $305 million."
Jerry Jones values the Cowboys' ability to add quality players through the draft and free agency and credits a decision at the start of the 2025 season for that progress. Jones views the Micah Parsons trade's full benefits as still ahead. Jones has signaled a willingness to "bust the budget" chasing a goal of being the NFL owner with the most Super Bowl wins. The 2026 salary-cap picture remains uncertain, with roughly $330 million in current contracts versus projections near $295–$305 million, creating a need for roughly $30 million in cap relief. Tagging George Pickens would add about $28 million to the cap immediately. Restructuring contracts for several core players could free upward of $100 million, but at least two restructures carry significant caveats, particularly a full restructure on Dak Prescott.
