Commanders cut Matt Gay after two more missed field goals in Madrid
"Matt has been a fantastic teammate here, and an all-time good dude,"
"So yeah, really bummed that it didn't work out, but we just felt, hey, this was the change that we needed."
""It only counts if it goes through,""
""I don't know what lesson this is going to teach me. But it's going to teach me something," Gay said. "And I'm going to come out stronger from this. Hopefully I'll have other opportunities to go out there and play.""
The Commanders released veteran kicker Matt Gay following missed field goals in a 16-13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins in Madrid. Coach Dan Quinn and GM Adam Peters cited broader performance issues rather than only the two missed attempts — a 51-yarder and a 56-yarder — as the reason for the move. Gay converted 13 of 19 field-goal attempts this season and struggled from beyond 50 yards, missing five while making four through 10 games. Gay, a seven-year veteran and Super Bowl winner, expressed emotion after the game and vowed to learn and return stronger. Washington enters the bye week 3-8 and will continue seeking a kicker.
