""Transitions are hard," he said. "It's not just those who have played in the National Football League, but all high achievers.""
""CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a diagnosis that can only be made after an individual dies," said Dr. Ashwin Ramayya, a neurosurgery professor at Stanford University. "That's a big limitation in what we can understand about this disease.""
The Oakland Police Department plans to release body-camera footage of officers' struggle with Doug Martin, 36, who died while in police custody. Martin's family said he had been struggling with mental health issues, prompting community outcry and attention to head trauma and athlete mental health. Martin's brain will be preserved for testing for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau said no preliminary reports are available and that an autopsy and death report will take 3–6 months. ABC7 requested 911 calls, body camera footage, and police reports related to the incident. NFL veteran Dwayne Allen said transitions out of sports are difficult, and Dr. Ashwin Ramayya noted CTE can only be diagnosed after death, limiting understanding of the disease.
