The National Park Service has removed the 'History Under Construction' exhibit from Muir Woods National Monument, marking a response to a directive from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. The 2021 exhibit sought to provide expanded narratives of the land's history, highlighting the Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo peoples, colonial violence, and efforts by early conservationists. Ranger annotations included significant historical events, such as the enslavement of Native Americans and the problematic views of park namesake John Muir. The intention of the exhibit was to include previously overlooked contexts and present a more complete historical narrative to visitors.
"Alert: History Under Construction. Everything on this sign is true but incomplete." This message was part of the exhibit aimed at enhancing historical narratives at Muir Woods National Monument, showcasing untold stories of indigenous peoples and colonial impacts.
"We didn't want to take anything out. All we wanted to do was add in," states former park ranger Elizabeth Villano, emphasizing the intent behind the revised exhibit was to enrich the visitor’s understanding of the site’s history.
