2026 Chicago Bears Offseason: Important Dates, Deadlines, and When to Expect Things
"Two years ago, the Bears used the tag on cornerback Jaylon Johnson before signing his extension. And while the Bears have a bunch of notable free agents, I'm not sure they have a player worthy of getting the Franchise Tag. Perhaps safety Kevin Byard III could get the tag treatment from Chicago, which Over The Cap projections forecast to be $20.876 million for the Franchise Tag and $16.485 million for the Transition Tag in 2026."
"Even though Chicago's football team is picking outside of the top-10 for the first time in a while, we'll keep an eye on what happens at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The annual event is where hundreds of draft-eligible NFL hopefuls participate in training, testing, and timing drills. They also meet with the league's coaches, scouts, and media members to jump-start the pre-draft process. It all begins on Feb. 23 and runs through March 2."
February 17 is the first date teams can place the Franchise or Transition Tag on players. The Bears used the franchise tag on Jaylon Johnson two years ago and could consider tagging Kevin Byard III, with Over The Cap projecting $20.876 million for the Franchise Tag and $16.485 million for the Transition Tag in 2026. Teams must designate tagged players by 3 p.m. CT on March 3 and have until July 15 to reach a multi-year contract. The NFL Scouting Combine runs Feb. 23–March 2 in Indianapolis and showcases draft-eligible prospects. The new league year begins March 11, when free agency opens and trades become official.
