UNC basketball needed to change. Will Tar Heels' plan to return to top come together?
Briefly

In a bid to revitalize a struggling program, North Carolina has appointed Jim Tanner as its first general manager. Tanner, an influential NBA agent and UNC alumnus, is credited with deep connections to the basketball community and a thorough understanding of the program's needs. Following a disappointing season where the team risks missing the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, Tanner's hiring signifies a pivotal shift towards modernization, addressing concerns over past performance while hoping to reinvigorate team success and fan engagement under head coach Hubert Davis.
Kind of a no-brainer hire, said Hansbrough, formerly represented by Tanner, as was Jackson. He's very well-connected, and he understands a lot about the program that a lot of people on the outside wouldn't.
Hiring Tanner was no luxury decision, but rather a necessary move by a program sorely in need of modernizing, according to multiple program and industry sources who spoke with The Athletic.
It would be an understatement to say that he and UNC cannot afford another down season.
After missing the NCAA Tournament only four times from 1975 until 2021, Hubert Davis' Tar Heels could miss the Big Dance for the second time in three seasons.
