St. John's earned seven of 11 first-place votes to top the Big East preseason coaches' poll for the first time since 1991-92. Zuby Ejiofor was selected preseason player of the year after averaging 14.7 points and 8.1 rebounds while shooting nearly 58% last season. UConn received the other four first-place votes and has the preseason freshman of the year in Braylon Mullins. AP preseason rankings list UConn fourth and St. John's fifth, marking St. John's highest-ever AP preseason ranking. Creighton, Providence, Marquette, Georgetown, Villanova, Xavier, DePaul, Butler and Seton Hall followed. Villanova hired Kevin Willard and Xavier hired Richard Pitino; Rick and Richard Pitino will face each other twice.
