Nico Harrison traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis while asserting the move would enable immediate and future success. Dončić had led the Mavericks to the N.B.A. Finals the prior season. Davis suffered an adductor strain in his first game with Dallas and missed several weeks, and Kyrie Irving later tore his ACL. The Mavericks finished 13-20 and missed the playoffs. Dallas then improbably won the draft lottery with a 1.8 percent chance and selected Cooper Flagg. After a 3-8 start this season and renewed injuries, Harrison was fired.
