Pope rues 'poorly coached' Kentucky after blowout
"We're far away from the team we hope and aspire to be, and we can't waste a second on trying to grow into that,"
"We're disappointed and discouraged and completely discombobulated right now."
"I know there's one team that's really, really well coached and one team that was really poorly coached,"
"If you build an organization the right way, then your identity is not about an individual person. Your identity is about a collective group,"
Kentucky lost 83-66 to Michigan State in the Champions Classic, trailing by as many as 24 late in the second half. The defeat marked the Wildcats' second loss in three games after a loss to Louisville. Coach Mark Pope entered the postgame news conference more than 50 minutes late and acknowledged responsibility for communication and coaching failures. Kentucky was missing starting point guard Jaland Lowe and projected lottery pick Jayden Quaintance because of injuries. Broadcast reports noted players "barking at each other" during a second-half timeout. Pope emphasized collective identity and acknowledged shortcomings in organizational culture while vowing not to fail this season.
