Waymo will start testing its autonomous cars in New York again
Briefly

Waymo is set to return to New York City in July with manually driven autonomous cars as part of its plan to eventually offer full autonomous ride-hailing services. Given the state's laws prohibiting driverless operation, Waymo has requested a permit from the New York Department of Transportation for a testing deployment with a trained specialist in the driver's seat. The company has faced prior challenges in NYC, especially with navigating difficult weather, a contrast to its typical climate. Meanwhile, Waymo expands its presence in other cities like San Francisco, Austin, and Los Angeles.
New York state law currently doesn't allow for the operation of a vehicle without a human driver, an obvious obstacle for a company like Waymo.
If NYC DOT approves the permit, the company says this will be the first 'testing deployment' of autonomous vehicles in New York City.
