Walmart has launched a pilot program aimed at enhancing the security of its Spark delivery service by verifying the identities of gig workers. The initiative involves requiring drivers to bring their driver's licenses to designated Walmart stores, with a one-time payment of $15 offered for this verification. The move is reportedly in response to identity fraud affecting delivery apps and follows a significant hack that compromised 200 Spark accounts earlier this year. Walmart aims to test the program in select markets and assess its outcomes before expanding it further.
"All drivers in your area will need to complete an in-person identity verification," said the message, in part.
This is a pilot we are testing in certain markets, and we will evaluate the results before making any longer-term decisions.
Identity fraud has been a problem for many delivery apps.
Walmart reported a Spark hacker attack earlier this year that accessed 200 accounts.
