Newark airport radar screens go dark again - two weeks after outage wreaked havoc
Briefly

Newark Liberty International Airport experienced another radar outage on Friday, merely two weeks post a significant incident that led to massive flight cancellations. The outage, occurring just before 4 a.m., prompted urgent communications from air traffic controllers to incoming flights, cautioning them about the situation. They advised one plane to maintain altitude to prevent a potential loss of contact. The FAA previously attributed the earlier outage on April 28 to air traffic controller shortages and ongoing runway construction, highlighting ongoing operational challenges at the airport.
In one recording, a controller could be heard telling a private jet en route from Cyprus that it should stay above 3,000 feet in case they lost touch during the descent.
The FAA was quick to blame that meltdown on a shortage of air traffic controllers at the airport, as well as runway construction.
