I left vet school to start a cat-sitting business. I'd never go back to a salaried job.
Briefly

August Odenbaugh, a former aspiring veterinarian, found herself burned out and suffering from compassion fatigue while in vet school. Realizing the high emotional toll of the profession, she pivoted during the pandemic towards pet sitting as a way to reclaim her love for animals. Odenbaugh started working part-time through Rover, taking on all types of pet care jobs. Over time, she discovered that she was happier and earned more per hour as a full-time cat sitter, finding fulfillment in a job that allowed for flexibility and joy.
I realized that I had to do something totally different. I wanted a job where I could reclaim my love for working with animals.
Like most pet sitters, I started off listing myself on the pet care app, Rover. I accepted any requests that came my way.
I liked pet sitting more than any traditional job would offer. I was happier and made more money per hour working from home.
The pandemic made jobs hard to come by, but it also propelled me to find an environment where the animals were happy.
