Brad Karp, the managing partner of the prestigious law firm Paul, Weiss, recently defended the firm's decision to settle with the Trump administration after facing criticism. The firm perceived a protracted legal battle with the administration as potentially damaging and feared that losing clients would lead to dire financial consequences. Karp highlighted that while some lawyers wanted to contest the executive order in court, the corporate division emphasized that reaching a deal was necessary to maintain client trust and avoid losing business to rival firms.
The firm's clients were deeply concerned that even if Paul, Weiss won in court, it would still be labeled persona non grata with the administration.
Members of the corporate practice insisted that Mr. Karp reach a deal to prevent clients from fleeing, which prompted the decision to negotiate.
