Federal Republicans are pushing to halt state regulation on artificial intelligence, proposing a 10-year moratorium. This move, part of a budget reconciliation bill, favors large tech firms but threatens state-level protections, especially in New York, which has recently passed laws against sexually explicit deep fakes and AI chatbots' emotional dependency risks. Meanwhile, Democrats argue that states must act in light of federal inaction, with Congress delaying necessary AI regulations. New York's existing laws aim to prevent election fraud and require transparency in AI usage, underscoring the rising urgency for regulation amidst AI's rapid evolution.
We know we need to have a national standard," said Rep. Brett Guthrie, a Kentucky Republican.
All of these protections are protections that Congress refuses to take up, and so states are taking up this responsibility," said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
New York currently has other laws on AI use, including ones that prevent election interference through the use of deep fakes of candidates.
Republicans in Congress are looking to stop states from enforcing laws that set guardrails on the use of artificial intelligence.
