FaunaDB, the flexible serverless database that combines relational features with document storage, will cease operations by the end of May. Despite raising $27 million in venture capital and attracting 25,000 developers, the company struggled to attract further investment under current market conditions. Existing customers will face no immediate disruptions as Fauna plans a gradual transition. Notably, the company will also release its core technology as open-source, including its query language (FQL), which might have benefited from an open-source model from its inception according to commentators.
FaunaDB's leadership team stated that "Driving broad based adoption of a new operational database that runs as a service globally is very capital intensive. In the current market environment, our board and investors have determined that it is not possible to raise the capital needed to achieve that goal independently."
FaunaDB announced plans to transition customers gradually, ensuring a smooth process saying, "While we will no longer be accepting new customers, existing Fauna customers will experience no immediate change."
Fauna plans to release an open-source version of its core database technology, featuring consistency, support for joins and foreign keys, and full schema enforcement.
A commentator remarked, "While there is no alternative history, I wonder what would have happened if Fauna had chosen to start as Open Source, become 100x more widely adopted but monetize a smaller portion of their customers due to 'competing' open source."
