The NYC Department of Transportation announced a safety initiative to replace unsafe e-bikes used by delivery workers with fire-safe certified models. The program includes the distribution of over 400 new e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries after recipients complete an online safety course. Speed regulations are also emphasized to protect community safety. Although recent statistics indicate a reduction in fatalities linked to e-bike batteries, officials acknowledge ongoing risks associated with micromobility devices and encourage food delivery companies to support safer practices for their workers.
Before getting the new equipment, recipients will be required to complete an online safety course.
There have been no fatalities this year due to e-bike batteries, while there were 18 deaths and 150 injuries from the devices in 2023.
