Bike Plant, a bike shop in Bed-Stuy, celebrates its fourth anniversary while promoting a repair fund aimed at helping migrants and low-income residents gain access to bicycles. This fund, initiated in 2022, allows people to either get refurbished bikes for free or through a pay-what-you-want model. The initiative raised approximately $42,000 so far and aims to strengthen community ties through mutual aid, particularly in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood that once was more affordable. Founder Robin Graven-Milne emphasizes the importance of accessibility to work and services for all community members.
The repair fund covers refurbishing bikes, and then we either give 'em away or we do a pay-what-you-want situation for them. It's a good stepping stone to being able to get around the city.
We have a [poster] at the shop that kind of encourages people to think about their generational wealth, their current wealth... If it's gonna prevent you from, you know, buying groceries... just use the repair fund.
