A runway under construction at Newark's beleaguered airport reopens early
Briefly

Newark Liberty International Airport's runway 4L-22R has reopened nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, after being closed for renovations that contributed to significant flight delays. The timely resumption of operations is anticipated to alleviate congestion exacerbated by staffing shortages and technical issues at the airport. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy commended the Port Authority and construction crews for their expedited work amidst these challenges. Severe technical problems encountered by air traffic controllers and reduced operational capacity had previously prompted the FAA to limit flight arrivals and departures.
The problems at Newark recently came to a head when air traffic controllers directing planes to and from the airport experienced major technical problems, including the loss of radar and communication abilities.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy praised the Port Authority officials and workers for completing the runway renovation project 13 days ahead of schedule, a critical move to ease airport congestion.
