DaNita Batiste, a Louisiana woman, is engaged in a legal battle to reclaim her family's land, which has been in their possession for over 200 years. After inheriting the property from her mother in 2020, Batiste discovered that fraudsters had used a forged ID to sell the lot without her knowledge. The new owner, Live Oak Insurance Co., was unaware of the fraudulent transaction. Batiste, who planned to rebuild on the lot, is now advocating against rising property fraud linked to international crime rings.
"I own that property. I did not sell it to you, and I'm the real DaNita Batiste," she recalls telling the new owner, who was unaware of the fraud."
"That land's been in our family for generation after generation, 200 years and maybe further back," Batiste expressed the deep familial connection to the lot.
