A three-alarm fire engulfed a mixed-occupancy building in Borough Park early Monday, displacing more than a dozen residents. Firefighters discovered flames originating from Savon Shoes on the first floor, which spread rapidly through void spaces to the apartments above. The building’s lack of ventilation made firefighting efforts particularly challenging. Over 125 FDNY personnel responded, and the fire was controlled by 3:45 a.m. The American Red Cross assisted those displaced, and the fire’s cause is still under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals. Additionally, the Department of Buildings is assessing the building's structural integrity.
The building lacked windows for ventilation purposes, making the fire tougher for our members to fight. The department store had a lot of stock, which intensified the situation.
You couldn't see the block, that's how heavy the smoke was. It was like nothing I'd seen before.
More than 125 FDNY personnel worked to bring the fire under control, using six hose lines on the first floor, the stairwell, and the second floor.
The cause remains under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals, while the Department of Buildings' Emergency Response Team is set to assess the structural stability of the building.
