Sunrise Mall in Massapequa to be demolished, owner seeks subdivision approval
Briefly

Sunrise Mall Holdings is planning to demolish the nearly vacant Sunrise Mall as part of a strategy to revitalize the struggling property, having purchased it at a significant discount in 2020. The company has submitted plans to Nassau County for subdividing the 77-acre site into four parcels to facilitate future developments. A hearing by the Nassau County Planning Commission is scheduled to evaluate this subdivision request, with the mall's demolition, including its former Sears Auto Center, also on the agenda as part of a broader redevelopment initiative.
The application now before the Nassau County Planning Commission is a procedural process designed to subdivide parcels for future uses at the property. Any development applications for those uses will be submitted to the appropriate governing bodies with applicable notice and opportunity for public comment.
Sunrise Mall Holdings bought the mall from Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, a Paris-based company, in December 2020 for $29.7 million, a steep discount from the $143 million - not adjusted for inflation - that the property sold for in 2005.
