The construction of ABC No Rio's new energy-efficient building began after years of delays, allowing the collective to return to its historic address at 156 Rivington Street.
Director Steve Englander expressed optimism about the project's timeline, stating, 'Basically, we're looking at 20 months for phase one, and then how we approach phase two is still to be decided.'
The project is largely funded by the City, which allocated $21 million, signaling a shift from past violent evictions by police to current support from city officials.
Longtime volunteer Mike Estabrook reminisced about the days of illegal squatting, saying, 'We were warned that if the cops knocked on the door, we should slam the door in their faces and bolt it.'
