A recent investigation revealed that the fatal collapse of the Lower Manhattan parking garage was triggered by unapproved demolition activities and prolonged structural neglect. The garage, operating for nearly a century, suffered from deterioration, including compromised load-bearing structures. An unauthorized removal of bricks weakened a critical pier, leading to a fatal collapse. The city officials emphasized that the tragedy was preventable and highlighted negligence by the garage operator, who failed to secure necessary permits or assess structural risks adequately.
The reckless direction of these workers to remove bricks from the pier, together with the failure to report the issue to DOB, caused this building to come down.
Extensive deterioration - including cracked concrete, corroded steel reinforcements and poorly connected walls - left the building especially vulnerable.
