The childhood home of Pope Leo XIV in Dolton, Illinois, is being auctioned with bids starting from $250,000, following significant interest post his appointment. Originally bought by the current homeowners for $66,000, they faced a surge in bids after the pope's rise in popularity. The Village of Dolton intends to acquire the property, potentially via eminent domain, complicating the auction process. Local authorities are collaborating with the Chicago Archdiocese to decide its future use, creating uncertainty for prospective buyers.
"It's like a collectible car they only made one of," Steve Budzik, the homeowner's real estate agent, told BI earlier this month.
"If a direct purchase from the seller cannot be negotiated, the Village will cause Eminent Domain proceedings to be filed in Court and take the property through the legal process," Burton S. Odelson wrote in an email to BI.
