The Antioch City Council has passed a just cause ordinance with a 5-0 vote, enhancing tenant protections while balancing landlord concerns. This includes allowing evicted tenants to return post-renovations at similar rates to previous rents, and requires landlords to give 120 days’ notice, or one year for disabled tenants and seniors. Additionally, landlords must provide relocation assistance equal to double the monthly rent, marking a significant step towards safeguarding renters' rights.
Middle-schooler Jadon Pierre King expressed concern over evictions during school years, highlighting that children should not face homelessness. He stated, "If we are worried about leaving our home, then we can't focus on school. If we are homeless, we won't have a safe place to sleep, eat, relax, or do our homework. If we get evicted, we lose our support system and friends." His plea underscores the devastating impact homelessness can have on education.
Addison Peterson, a District 3 council candidate, emphasized that protecting residents from unjust evictions is critical for fair housing. He articulated, "Housing is a human right and by passing just cause eviction protections, we are affirming that Antioch values its residents and prioritizes equitable housing solutions. These measures will contribute to creating a safer community where families can be secure in their homes."
