Zohran Mamdani accuses pro-Cuomo super PAC of racism for altering his image
Briefly

A pro-Andrew Cuomo super PAC, Fix the City, inadvertently sparked controversy by distributing a flier with a manipulated photo of Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. The altered image amplified racial stereotypes, prompting Mamdani to accuse Cuomo of Islamophobia, especially as Cuomo leads the Democratic primary polls. Although Fix the City claimed the doctored photo was rejected, its circulation on social media led to significant backlash. The incident occurred ahead of a critical debate, highlighting the charged atmosphere in Syracuse's mayoral race.
"This is blatant Islamophobia - the kind of racism that explains why MAGA billionaires support his campaign," Mamdani said on X on Thursday.
"This wasn't an accident... Thickening and darkening my beard - playing into racist tropes - was meant to make me look threatening," Mamdani added.
