Westchester County is uncertain about the summer opening of Playland amusement park due to a breakup with its management company, Standard Amusements. The operator cited the countyâs failure to fulfill construction obligations despite significant taxpayer investments of around $150 million. County officials attributed the park's deteriorating state to earlier management decisions, claiming taxpayers are left paying the price. Amid political blame games between current and former officials, County Executive Kenneth Jenkins promised an opening this summer without specific details on operations.
âThis is exactly what happens when someone with a radical ideology, no real experience, no financial skill, and no understanding of how budgets and contracts are built seeks an executive position,â Westchester County Communications Director Catherine Cioffi said.
âImagine making taxpayers pay $36 million to NOT open Playland!â she wrote, referencing a proposed bond to repay Standard Amusements after the park's management deal fell apart.
