City agencies issued simultaneous year-end press releases touting record achievements across bike lanes, housing, compost collection, crime reduction, and job creation. The Department of Transportation claimed a record number of protected bike lanes installed over four years yet omitted specific counts and mileage. The omission is significant because a four-year legal requirement required construction of 180 miles of protected bike lanes. The DOT also failed to disclose miles of protected lanes removed and instances of lane appropriation, including Drug Enforcement Administration parking on 10th Avenue. Reporters spent time querying the DOT press office for supporting numbers.
