Elzon Lemus, a Hispanic U.S. citizen from Brentwood, was detained by ICE agents without probable cause during a vehicle stop in Nassau County. The encounter, recorded on video, reveals the agents asserting they were looking for someone who matched Lemus's appearance, leading to a confrontation over identification. Lemus resisted providing his ID due to the lack of reasonable suspicion. His attorney argues this case exemplifies the dangers of ICE's street patrols, and Lemus describes his experience as racially motivated, expressing a feeling of victimization due to his ethnicity.
"If we don't get your ID, then we're gonna have to figure out another way to ID you, and it may not work out well for you," an agent is heard saying in the video.
"I am a victim because of my race," Lemus said, highlighting the personal impact of the ICE encounter on his sense of identity and safety.
Legal representatives say this is a perfect example as to why ICE shouldn't be on the streets patrolling, as they pose a risk to citizens.
Lemus' attorney, Frederick K. Brewington, states that from the beginning to the end of the stop, the ICE agents were in the wrong for detaining him.
