Mayor Eric Adams is pushing for the implementation of large trash containers, nicknamed "spaceships," to combat the city's rat problem. However, many locals are unhappy, citing that these bins are unsightly and disruptive to the neighborhoods, detracting from the quality of life and reducing available public space. Some community members question the effectiveness of these bins compared to individual anti-rat solutions and express concerns about their aesthetic impact and permanence. While city sanitation claims improved results from pilot programs, residents remain skeptical about the overall benefits.
"They look out of place here," says Marcus Delgado. "Like a robot sitting there with two arms sticking out."
A Sanitation rep insists a 2023 pilot trial of the bins showed "fantastic results" - with rat sightings reported to 311 "down a staggering 60%."
One Hamilton Heights woman fumes that the "hideous" contraptions clash with the neighborhood's aesthetic; another warns, "It's not the right fit."
